Emo Of Friesland was the first international student to study at Oxford and arrived in 1190. Emo became first prior of the abbey 'Bloemhof' in Wittewierum and wrote the first part of the chronicles of the abbey, that gives us unique information about life in Friesland in the early 13th century as well as its place in wider Europe. Friesland is on the North Sea coast from the North of the Netherlands to the Weser in Germany. Emo was from the shire of Fivelgo, in the current province of Groningen in the Netherlands.
