Protestant leaders Archbishop [Cranmer]? and Bishops [Ridley]? and [Latimer]? were imprisoned by the Catholic Queen Mary accused of heresy. They were cross-examined at the [Divinity Schools]? and later tried at St. Mary's Church and found guilty. Ridley and Latimer were the first to be burnt at the stake in what was the town ditch, but is now the site of Broad Street. Although Cranmer renounced his faith he was burnt at the stake having first thrust the hand he used to sign the recantation into the fire. A cross in Broad Street marks the spot where they were burnt at the stake, and Martyrs' Memorial was errected at the southern end of St. Giles' in 1841.
