Oxford Castle, or mound, was the site of the castle built in 1071 shortly after the Norman conquest. The castle was of a motte and bailey design with the bailey being located where Oxford Prison was later built. Only the mound of the motte and St George's Tower now remain. Interestingly the city walls predate the castle. category='Locales' See also: * Gaol Fever — a 1996 video on Oxford Castle (free to view and download) * Wikipedia entry Things in Oxford Castle (@MAP_LINK view them on a map): @INDEX_LIST Locale Oxford Castle address= category='History,Locales' edit_type='Normal edit' fax= formatted_website_text='http://www.oxfordcas...' host='95.177.7.38' hours_text= locale='Central' major_change='1' map_link= node_image='http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7053/6951743013_87eb763707_m.jpg' node_image_copyright='Janet McKnight' node_image_licence='http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en_GB' node_image_url='http://www.flickr.com/photos/janetmck/6951743013/' opening_hours_text= phone= postcode='OX1 1AY' summary= website='http://www.oxfordcastle.com/' |
