Blackwell's is the largest and most famous of the bookshops in Oxford. Founded in 1879 on Broad Street by Benjamin Henry Blackwell the company has expanded in the past century and has a great reputation among academics. The original company is now actually two companies: Blackwell's Bookshops, and Blackwell's Publishing and is headed by by Philip Blackwell, the great grandson of Benjamin Henry Blackwell. Blackwell's now has over 70 shops around the UK.

Blackwell's has four shops in Oxford. One main store at 48-51 Broad Street selling fiction and non-fiction; two specialist shops, also on Broad Street, for Art and Music; and a small shop within Brookes university. The Rare Books shop is located within the main Broad Street shop. The Medical shop has closed.

The Broad Street bookshop is well worth a visit just to see the Norrington room, the largest single display of books for sale in one room anywhere in the world (over 160,000 volumes in 10,000 square feet). There is a Coffee Republic café on the first floor.
