Historical version 6 of Cherwell (view current version)
The Cherwell flows into central Oxford between Summertown and [Marston]? and then on past the University Parks. The river runs east of central Oxford, crossing high street between Magdalen College and The Plain before joining the Thames or Isis. Between the University Parks and The Plain the river meanders and splits into a variety of navigable and unnavigable rivers and streams around St. Catherine's College. The river is quite calm except after heavy rain and is where most of the punting in Oxford takes place.
During the May Day celebrations many students jump from Magdalen bridge into the Cherwell, although I've yet to figure out why. Not to be confused with The Cherwell, a student newspaper which is probably unsuitable for diving.
