Historical version 5 of Four Candles (view current version)

A Wetherspoon's pub, opened 4 August 2008 on the site of the Slug and Lettuce and (before that) Yates's Wine Lodge.

This is the first Wetherspoon's in the centre of Oxford, though the chain already had the William Morris in Cowley.

The name comes from a famous comedy sketch by Ronnie Barker, who attended the City of Oxford High School for Boys in George Street. There is a display in the corner of the pub explaining this. There are several other interesting-looking displays around the walls.

They've managed to make it seem surprisingly spacious inside, helped by the double-height bar area. Don't forget that there are tables upstairs.

Food came very quickly and was good value as one might expect.

Unusually for a Wetherspoon, there is no real cider at all, even in bottles.
