A friendly local pub somewhat off the beaten track. As might be expected of the pub voted "pub of the year" by the Oxford CAMRA branch, the beer was in excellent condition, with a choice of three real ales on offer. We were given a warm welcome by the landlord and received friendly, no-nonsense service throughout the evening.

We didn't get a chance to sample the food. The menu looked to be reasonably priced standard pub fare; pretty uninspiring, but then you're probably not here for the food.

The landlord seemed pretty miffed that, despite the pub of the year accolade, they have not got a mention in this year's Good Beer Guide. There is a big poster in the bar asking "what the **** is that all about?"

It was a Friday evening when we visited. There were only a handful of people in the pub when we arrived (around 6pm); it got a bit busier later on, but not so much as to bring the single barman out in a sweat. We left shortly after 10pm, leaving only a handful of customers in the bar. The poor trade is probably why the landlord is talking about giving up the pub. That would be a real shame, as small, independent pubs serving well-kept real ales in Oxford are a dying breed.
