Reviews of pubs in this guide tend to focus on their availability of real ales: noble really, but I prefer to focus on the availability of comfortable armchairs. Jude The Obscure has comfortable armchairs and if you are lucky enough to score one your night, nay week, is made. If you manage to get a seat I like this pub—it doesn't have horrible TVs and tends to have a friendly crowd.
Beer here seems to be quite variable. They have a range of guest ales, but on occasion they have been very badly kept (and on other occasions very drinkable). They have a Cask Marque attribution, so I recommend trying before you buy.
They claim to have food but the time I tried (a Wednesday night) after consultation behind the bar they decided they didn't have food that day. However when they do have food it is very nice pub food. On the night someone else was there the menu said they served until 9pm, but they stopped at 8.
The menu, very sensibly, recommends lunchtime groups can pre-order by email or telephone. The email address was a sadly unmemorable random firstname.lastname@example.org or something like that.
Quiz night on Wednesdays. Oh, toilets down the back on the right.
There are a couple of tables out the front facing directly onto Walton Street, and a small beer-garden round the back.
Took credit cards, but I didn't ask about a minimum charge.
