The Cowley Road extends reasonably far out from the Plain, and contains a pretty wide selection of restaurants and, increasingly, late-licensed bars. There's also a few Indian (and one Russian!) food stores, a supermarket (Tesco Cowley Road) at least one good health food shop, (Uhuru) and any number of extremely dodgy letting agents and bike shops.
Housing in the area is cheap, and so most students tend to end up living there for at least a year at some point during their time at Oxford.
