Getting to the Turf seems to confuse my girlfriend and I assume she's not the only one. When I was a Part II, my room overlooked New College Tower and this pub, which for most of the day makes a pleasant noise not unlike a cricket match, often accompanied by the clink of cutlery on china. Food reasonable at three quid a basket, often coming with vegetables. Sausage and mash a bit steeper, though.

They have replaced the braziers with Martians (Pete: the back garden still has braziers (05Feb04)), which is a shame, and I haven't seen the beerhouse in the open-air bit round the back in use for years. Possibly not since the last election. Distracting video game indoors. Weston's Old Rosie still generally available. And they're doing Sign of Spring again this year. It's made with green hops, and is green. Green, I tell you. Hoppy, too.

The selection of guest beers tends to cycle every week and there's usually a fair choice of real ales. Sometimes the cycle is a little too fast however and it would be nice to have a comforting familiarity with their wares.

Stock control may be a problem - Richard noted that they are out of Old Rosie quite often, though that is their regular cider.

When visiting in June 2008 on a Saturday, although they stated that their kitchen was open until 3, they actually stopped taking orders a while before that due to a backlog - so don't rely on getting food there late.
I'm getting more and more fed up with the Turf, which has become a victim of its own success to the point that I find it almost impossible to visit in term time. Food's available up to 7:30. Old Rosie, Archers Golden (Pete: Actually, the regulars are Old Rosie and Hoegaarden (05Feb04) ) are the regulars, up to 10 guests. GBG regular.

Richard Fairhurst, July 2007
I've never found a pub that has as much difficulty with its cider stock control as this one. They've run out of Old Rosie on approximately 75% of my visits - I may be unlucky, but I doubt it. Fortunately, the Cape of Good Hope, which has draught Westons Organic Vintage and a good range of bottles, is not too far away: and the White Horse is very close if you don't mind a pint of Addlestones.

You are in a maze of twisty passages, all alike.

 • Hoegaarden White Beer £3.25

The Turf Tavern was the overall and national winner in the 2007 Abbot Ale Perfect Cask Ale Pub awards.

The Turf Tavern is very much a student pub and if you're looking to find it at a quieter time, try visiting out of term time. Of course the best time to visit the Turf is during the winter when it's far too cold to sensibly sit outside. Of course, you will sit outside. The beerhouse at the back does now appear to open but only during busy summer days. Although they do still have the gas heaters, the braziers are still used during the winter. Marshmallows and sticks available at the bar.
