From outside the Sheldonian Theatre and King's Arms take the little passage just underneath the bridge between the two halves of Hertford College. Alternatively from Holywell Street, follow the passage leading to Bath Place Hotel.

The Turf Tavern was the overall and national winner in the 2007 Abbot Ale Perfect Cask Ale Pub awards.
When I was a Part II, my room overlooked New College Tower and this pub, which for most of the day makes a pleasant noise not unlike a cricket match, often accompanied by the clink of cutlery on china. Food reasonable at three quid a basket, often coming with vegetables. Sausage and mash a bit steeper, though.

The Turf Tavern is very much a student pub and if you're looking to find it at a quieter time, try visiting out of term time. Of course the best time to visit the Turf is during the winter when it's far too cold to sensibly sit outside. Of course, you will sit outside. The beerhouse at the back does now appear to open but only during busy summer days. Although they do still have the gas heaters, the braziers are still used during the winter. Marshmallows and sticks available at the bar.
They have replaced the braziers with Martians, which is a shame, and I haven't seen the beerhouse in the open-air bit round the back in use for years. Possibly not since the last election. Distracting video game indoors. Weston's Old Rosie still generally available. And they're doing Sign of Spring again this year. It's made with green hops, and is green. Green, I tell you. Hoppy, too.

The selection of guest beers tends to cycle every week and there's usually a fair choice of real ales. Sometimes the cycle is a little too fast however and it would be nice to have a comforting familiarity with their wares.

Stock control may be a problem - Richard noted that they are out of Old Rosie quite often, though that is their regular cider.

When visiting in June 2008 on a Saturday, although they stated that their kitchen was open until 3, they actually stopped taking orders a while before that due to a backlog - so don't rely on getting food there late.
